A surprising number of the people who ring us about a house clearance aren't local. They grew up in Wilmslow or Wigan, moved away for work, and now a parent has passed away or moved into care and the family home needs emptying. Taking a week off to drive up, sort through everything and arrange the clearance isn't always realistic. The good news is that it doesn't have to be.
Decide what's coming home with you
If you can make one visit, use it for the things only you can do. Go through photos, paperwork and the handful of items that really matter, and take them with you or ship them home. Everything else can be decided from a distance. Some families stick coloured labels on furniture that's going to relatives. Others just send us a list. Either works, as long as it's clear.
Sort out access
We'll need a way in. Common options are a key safe, a neighbour or relative who can let us in, or the estate agent or solicitor handling the property. Let us know any quirks too: parking, a tricky back gate, a dog next door. The more we know beforehand, the smoother the day goes.
Keep in touch on the day
Being far away doesn't mean being in the dark. We can send photos over WhatsApp before we start, while we work and once each room is empty, so you can see exactly what's happening. If the crew comes across something you might want, a box of letters or something that looks valuable, we'll message you before it goes anywhere.
Personal items found during the clearance
Every room gets checked before anything is loaded, including pockets, drawers and the backs of cupboards. Anything personal, such as documents, cash, jewellery or photographs, is set aside and returned to you. If you can't collect it, we can arrange for it to be left with whoever has the keys.
Paperwork you'll want afterwards
You'll get a Waste Transfer Note showing the waste was taken by a licensed carrier to an authorised site. Hold on to it, especially if you're the executor. It's also worth letting the council know the property is empty, as council tax changes after a death. If your parent lived in Wilmslow or Macclesfield, Cheshire East Council explains how council tax works when someone dies, and other councils have similar guidance.
Areas we cover
We regularly carry out remote clearances for families living elsewhere in the country, including house clearances in Warrington, Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Wigan and Bolton. You can find out more on our main house clearance page.
If you're trying to sort out a parent's home from a distance, call the office on 0161 464 6106 or email enquiries@seniorwaste.com. Photos of the rooms help us give you an accurate price without anyone needing to visit.
