People usually ring us asking for a skip, because a skip is the thing everyone has heard of. Quite often it is not the right answer. For a full house clearance, a hoarder property or a job on a tight terraced street in Trafford or Salford, the choice between a skip, a skip bag and a man and van service makes a real difference to cost, speed and hassle.
The short version
- Skip: best for high volume over several days, where you have a driveway or can get a permit, and where you are loading it yourself as you go.
- Skip bag: best for small to medium amounts of waste with nowhere to put a skip, and no rush.
- Man and van: best when you want it gone today, when nobody is available to load, or when access rules a skip out entirely.
When a skip is the right call
Skips make sense on renovation jobs, garden overhauls, garage and loft clearances, and any project where waste is produced steadily over days rather than appearing all at once. You keep the skip for the duration and fill it at your own pace, which is far cheaper than repeated collections.
The two things to check before booking are space and permission. If the skip is going on your own driveway or land, no permit is needed. If it has to sit on the public highway, you need a permit from the local council, which we can arrange as part of the booking. Permit lead times vary, so this is not something to leave until the morning of the job.
Also check what is going in. Skips are ideal for mixed household and construction waste, but heavy material such as soil, rubble, concrete and tiles is dense enough that it usually needs its own dedicated skip rather than going in with general waste. Overloading above the fill line is not a technicality either, since an unsafe load legally cannot be carried on the road.
When a skip bag works better
A skip bag suits smaller jobs and awkward locations. It folds flat, sits on the ground where you need it, and is collected by our skip van when you are ready. As a rough guide, a skip bag holds around ten to twelve black bin bags of waste, which covers a decluttered spare room, a modest garden tidy or the tail end of a bigger clearance. Do not overload it, because it needs to be lifted safely and cleanly by the vehicle.
The trade off is volume. If you are clearing an entire house, a skip bag will not touch the sides.
When man and van is the smarter option
This is the one people underestimate. With a man and van service you are paying for labour as well as disposal, and our team does the carrying. That matters when:
- The property is a hoarder or probate clearance and nobody wants to, or is able to, load a skip.
- Access is the problem. Narrow terraced streets in Stretford, Old Trafford, Salford and Sale often have no legal or practical place to drop a skip.
- You have controlled parking, permit holder bays or a residents' scheme that makes a static skip a headache.
- You need the property clear quickly, for a tenancy end, a completion date or a viewing.
- The waste is bulky but not that voluminous. Three sofas and a fridge freezer do not need a skip, they need a van and two people.
Because we only charge for the space your waste actually occupies in the van, a part load is often cheaper than a skip you never fill.
Access checks worth doing today
- Measure the drop. A skip lorry needs clear overhead space and a straight approach, and low trees, cables and narrow ginnels catch people out.
- Check for double yellows, permit bays and any active resident parking scheme on your street.
- Note whether the waste is upstairs, in a cellar or behind a locked garage, since that changes the labour required.
- Identify anything that cannot go in a general load, including fridges, freezers, mattresses, tyres, paint, asbestos and gas bottles. These need separate handling and it is far better to tell us in advance.
Always check the licence
Whichever option you choose, the person taking your waste must be a registered waste carrier and must take it to a permitted site. If waste from your address is fly tipped, the liability follows you as the waste producer. A cheap cash job is not cheap if it ends in a fixed penalty or a court appearance.
