Bury Residents Warned: Illegal Waste Dumping Fines Rise to £5,000 Under New Crackdown

Waste before collection in Bury

A new national crackdown on illegal waste dumping has been announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Greater Manchester, including Bury, is among the first areas in the country to see a dedicated region-led enforcement plan roll out.

Bigger Fines, Bigger Consequences

Fines for dumping waste illegally are rising from £300 to £5,000. The plan also brings more Environment Agency officers, wider use of detection drones, and faster asset seizure powers under the Crime and Policing Act 2026, aimed squarely at the organised gangs profiting from illegal waste sites.

Don't Get Caught Out

If someone you've paid to remove your waste dumps it illegally instead, you can still be held legally responsible under the duty of care rules. It costs nothing to check a waste carrier's licence on the Environment Agency's public register, and our own waste carrier licence page explains what a proper licence looks like.
