Bolton households and businesses are being urged to check who's actually taking their waste away, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham launches a nationwide crackdown on illegal waste dumping, with Greater Manchester named as one of the first regions to receive dedicated enforcement resource.
What's New
Illegal dumping fines are rising fivefold, from £300 to £5,000. The Environment Agency is being given more officers and better drone technology to catch offenders in the act, and new legal powers mean the National Crime Agency can move faster to seize the proceeds of waste crime.
Why It Matters to You
Bolton Council's household collections don't cover bulky items, renovation waste, or large clear-outs, which is exactly the gap that unlicensed "man with a van" operators try to fill, often for cash and often without a licence. If your waste ends up fly-tipped, you can be held responsible too, under the duty of care that applies to anyone who hands their waste to someone else.
Always ask to see a waste carrier's licence, or check them yourself on the Environment Agency register. Our own waste carrier licence page explains exactly what to look for before you book.
